Improving the energy efficiency of heritage buildings is one of the priorities of the European Commission. Historical buildings play an important role for their cultural value and social identity within the vast real estate heritage. Only by carefully planning the energy refurbishment of these buildings is it possible to improve users’ comfort while preserving the architectural features for which they are protected.

"Open BIM RenoZEB - Focchi Facades" is a free BIM software tool that has been developed as part of the RenoZEB research project: "Accelerating energy Renovation solutions for Zero Energy Buildings and Neighborhoods" which is part of the strategic program of the European Union Horizon 2020.

Most of the barriers to energy renovation are non-technical, and financing is one of the main barriers. To deepen this issue, this year, at the Sustainable Places Conference (Cagliari, 5-7 June 2019) the topic of discussion was “Exploitation of Business Models for Deep Renovation” as a key issue for ensuring the future implementation of the project results.

As proposed in the initial roadmap and Grant Agreement, three stages were carried out to organise work: a state of the art to identify standards and existing initiatives to be used in the ALDREN protocol, the definition of the working framework to shape outcomes and interconnections with other tasks and the construction of the indicators and protocol themselves.
