The EU’s old residential building stock requires retrofitting to become energy efficient. In turn, this will reduce energy consumption and costs. However, retrofitting is an expensive procedure and new innovative financial solutions are needed to accelerate the transformation of homes into energy-efficient structures. The EU-funded FITHOME project will propose a new financial instrument and new advanced digital methods for retrofitting processes, including flow management and quality assurance.

The occupant density in buildings is one of the major and overlooked parameters affecting the energy consumption and virus transmission risk in buildings. HVAC systems energy consumption is highly dependent on the number of occupants. Studies on the transmission of COVID-19 virus have indicated a direct relationship between occupant density and COVID-19 infection risk. This study aims to seek the optimum occupant distribution patterns that account for the lowest number of infected people and minimum energy consumption.

ZERO-PLUS is a comprehensive, cost-effective approach for the design, construction and monitoring of Net Zero Energy Settlements (NZESs). The proposed approach was applied in four case studies in different climatic settings, France, UK, Italy and Cyprus.
ZERO-PLUS settlements exceed the state of art by setting performance objectives requiring improvement relative to other energy-efficient buildings.

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) constitutes the largest volume of all solid wastes. As such, it poses not only an economic burden but also a threat to the environment.
Made up of a mix of materials generated during the construction and demolition of buildings or structures, the recycling of CDW remains a challenge.

Concept and objectives:
Thermal insulation of construction and building elements has become the most important measure to enhance energy savings in new and existing building stock. Stricter regulations (such as 2019/2021 EU Buildings Directive) have led to the use of huge thicknesses of standard insulation, almost always EPS and XPS.
An efficient use of a porous cementitious system as a thermal insulation material depends mainly on its air content.
