Situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park, Kendal College has recently been transformed into an 'eye-catching' landmark following the completion of a new build project. Making extensive use of local materials such as limestone and blue Lakeland slate combined with sustainable and environmental products the new buildings complement the surroundings and have achieved the BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.

Presenting ETP 2010 in Washington DC, IEA Executive Director Nobuo Tanaka said “after sowing the seeds for such a revolution in our last edition in 2008 by demonstrating that greater reliance on low-carbon technologies can transform the way we produce and use energy, ETP 2010 now highlights the first ‘green shoots’ of what could become such a fundamental change.” But he emphasised that current developments are still fragmented and fragile, and the rate of progress is still far too low to prevent dangerous increases in global temperatures. The study examines the experiences with building typologies in the European countries. The objective is to learn how to structure the variety of energy-related features of existing buildings. As a result of the enquiry it can be stated that there are a lot of different activities which are based on typological criteria. Some of them are concentrating on providing information material and conducting energy advice.

The education of a nation's population is the foundation for its improvement and growth in the international community. Educational buildings are the cornerstone of this foundation and they consume a large portion of a nation's non-industrial energy needs. The indoor climate of the buildings (indoor air quality, percepted temperature, possible glare and acoustics) have a substantial influence on the knowledge transfer.

Eco-Schools is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). In addition to Eco-Schools, FEE runs Green Key, Young Reporters for the Environment, Blue Flag and Learning about Forests. There are 46 countries around the world that run the Eco-Schools programme, linking more than 40,000 schools – from the UK to France, from Morocco to South Africa.
