The implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) has caused in most of the EU Member States more severe requirements for the energy demand of buildings. In order to meet these requirements, not only buildings components with better U-values and more efficient building systems have to be used, also the ventilation losses have to be reduced. A contribution to this necessary reduction is the improvement of the building envelope airtightness, mainly the airtightness of building components and joints.

The Effinergie association was created in May 2006 to promote low energy buildings in France. The initiative was taken by regional authorities, and particularly the Alsace, Franche-Comté, Languedoc-Roussillon and Rhône-Alpes regions. The objectives are to combine and optimize implementation of regional approaches, and to federate construction professionals and local communities.

The core measures of the energy concept are:a highly efficient airtight facade system without thermal bridges that reduces the heating and cooling need to a minimum and provides at the same time a high daylight quality. The energy need shall be reduced by factor 5 compared to regular new buildings in the area ground coupled capillary tubes in the plastry of the ceilings for a comfortable and stable indoor climate in summer and winter

This tool calculates characteristic indicators for the construction, such as linear (or point) thermal transmittance or the matrix of thermal coupling coefficients (i.e. boundary conditions independent results). AnTherm facilitates generation of geometrical models through a graphic input display of building structures, as well as by providing very fast, fully automated generation and precise solution of the underlying numerical model. AnTherm allows the user to control the precision of numerical solutions through parameters.

The energy efficient retrofit concept is based on a reduction of the primary energy need to a third of the German requirements for new buildings and on the environmental friendly supply of the remaining need including the neutralisation of the CO2 emissions. The main goal is to have an CO2 emission neutral building. High performance windows, an integrated insulation system with good airtightness and nearly no thermal bridges, mechanical ventilation with high heat recovery rates, user-dependent lighting and heating are measures to reduce the needs.
