The theme for the 2020 Summer Study is “Efficiency: The Core of a Clean Energy Future.” We chose this theme in recognition of the rapidly evolving ecosystem of the energy industry. From resilience to health, from distributed energy resources to renewables to grid integration and virtual batteries, energy efficiency remains critical to our success. Whatever the surrounding goals for expansion of clean energy systems and services, the ability to design and operate efficient buildings is an essential foundational requirement.

The Green Deal was a big deal at the European Energy Efficiency Conference in Wels/Austria from 4 - 6 March 2020. The event was a great success with 400 experts from 50 countries taking part. The conference focused on and how to make the energy transition happen and achieve climate neutrality in Europe and globally.

The Latvian GDP grew by 4.8% during 2018, the highest GDP growth rate since 2010. The growth was driven by consumer spending and strong investment levels supported by EU fund inflows.

In Bulgaria, around 1,400 buildings are being renovated and retrofitted since 2017 according to the Bulgarian Construction Chamber (BCC) as nearly 70% of the building stock was built before 1979.   The successful improvement of building performance and the adoption of renewable energy are especially challenging due to the skills shortage in the Bulgarian construction sector – a sector which accounts for 14.4% of Bulgarian GDP.

The Concerted Action for the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (CA EPBD), the Concerted Action for the Renewable Energy Sources Directive (CA RES) and the Concerted Action for the Energy Efficiency Directive (CA EED) organised the workshop during January 2020 in Barcelona, to explore synergies in the implementation of these three key pieces of European energy legislation.
