In 2018, primary energy intensity – an important indicator of how much energy is used by the global economy – improved by 1.2%, the slowest rate since 2010. This was slower than the 1.7% improvement in 2017 and marked the third year in a row the rate has declined. It was also well below the average 3% improvement consistent with the IEA Efficient World Strategy.

According to data recently released by the International Energy Agency (IEA), between 2013 and 2014, the world production of renewable energy grew by 2.6% representing around 1/7 of the total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) of 13,700 Mtoe.
Since 1990, the market share of renewable energy has been continuously growing at an average annual rate of 2.2%, higher than the 1.9% growth rate of TPES. Renewables are now the second largest source (22.3%) of global electricity generation (right after coal).
