Energy positive sewage treatment plants - A sustainable solution for climate protection in municipalities   The municipal wastewater in Europe contains an available chemical energy of about 87,500 GWh per year. This corresponds roughly to the capacity of 12 large power plants. Due to the currently used technologies and the associated energy loss in the individual process steps, sewage treatment in Europe instead consumes primary energy of more than two power plants.

Die Roadmaps für Energie (R4E) ist ein von der EU gefördertes Projekt im Rahmen des Programms Horizont 2020, mit dem Ziel zu entwickeln, eine neue Art von Energie-Strategie durch Visionen und roadmaps für die 8 partner der Städte, in co-Kreation mit relevanten lokalen Akteuren. Das Projekt konzentriert sich auf drei Bereiche, in den Bereich der nachhaltigen Energie, die eng mit den Gemeinden Hauptaufgaben: smart buildings, smart mobility und smart urban spaces.

The Horizon 2020 funded project SIMPLA (Sustainable Integrated Multi-sector PLAnning) supports local authorities in harmonising their Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs) and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).   The project targets small and medium-sized municipalities with a population between 50.000 and 350.000 inhabitants proposing a four-step approach to foster harmonised planning.

A start-up company called Green City Solutions has developed 4m high vertical plant walls with moss, called CityTrees. These moss installations feed on dirty air; they filter CO2, NOx and dust pollution and convert them to their own biomass. The company aims to tackle one of the biggest problems for people living in cities worldwide – air pollution. Every CityTree reduces local air pollution in a proximity until 50m by up to one third.

URBAN GreenUP is a project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Under the coordination of CARTIF Technology Centre, 25 partners from 9 countries are working together to develop a new strategy for re-naturing cities through Nature-Based Solutions. Activities will take place in the three demonstrator cities of Valladolid (Spain), Liverpool (UK) and Izmir (Turkey) and will be replicated across Europe, Latin America and Asia. The project was officially launched in Valladolid on 7th June.
