An important public building in the most populated city of Zagreb county, Velika Gorica, this kindergarten was in need of energy renovation as it was expensive to run and uncomfortable for its occupants. Having become an eco-school, the management realised that energy renovation was essential to underpin the new ethos of the school.

Backed by its mission to protect the Pacific Northwest’s natural environment and promote healthy and sustainable ecosystems, the Bullitt Foundation wanted their new headquarters to be built to the highest level of sustainability. They also wanted the building to be a demonstration project that would set a new standard for developers, architects, engineers and contractors.

The Lycée pour Professions de Santé in Ettelbruck, now the largest wooden building in the Grand Duchy, is a pilot project. It is indeed the first Luxembourg public building with positive energy. It is also the first in Luxembourg to aim for a "Minergie-P- ECO" certiﬁcation. In addition to the comfort of the occupants, which reaches its highest level thanks to this certification, it is also the ecological footprint of the building that has been at the centre of attention since the design phase.

In Bulgaria, around 1,400 buildings are being renovated and retrofitted since 2017 according to the Bulgarian Construction Chamber (BCC) as nearly 70% of the building stock was built before 1979.
The successful improvement of building performance and the adoption of renewable energy are especially challenging due to the skills shortage in the Bulgarian construction sector – a sector which accounts for 14.4% of Bulgarian GDP.

Data is fundamental to understand how much a building consumes, how much it is efficient and whether thermal comfort is adequate. However, how should this data be evaluated? Is it still possible to increase energy efficiency of buildings? A solution would be to make a comparison with similar contexts: for example, how much does a building consume on average under specific climatic conditions? How much energy can it obtain from its installed renewable energy sources?

A recent study carried out by an international group of building scientists showed that Estonia is among the countries with the most energy efficient buildings in Europe.
Among the analysis of NZEB energy performance of buildings in four countries (Estonia, Norway, Finland and Sweden), Estonia has shown to have the most energy efficient nearly zero energy buildings.

Latest available data is providing by national representatives, such as energy agencies or statistical organization, from all EU countries as well as Norway, Switzerland and Serbia.

With the increasing amount of data to monitor buildings, it becomes crucial to offer tools that help managers in taking the best decisions to better control the energy of their buildings, and to involve all actors in reducing their environmental impact.
