STARDUST’s City of Tampere was acknowledged during the Smart City Expo China 2018 for its goal to build a smart and sustainable future for its citizens
STARDUST is an Horizon2020 project started in October 2017 and running until September 2022. Its goal is to design and implement a number of smart urban interventions in the three Lighthouse cities of Pamplona (Spain), Tampere (Finland) and Trento (Italy). Four Follower cities (Cluj-Napoca in Romania, Derry in Northern Ireland, Kozani in Greece and Litomerice in Czech Republic) will help develop a sound replication strategy of the solutions developed by the project.
On September 5, the city of Tampere was awarded a prize for its work in the STARDUST project to become carbon neutral by 2030. Organized by the Foundation Prospective & Innovation together with the European Commission and the China Centre for Urban Development, the awarding event took place during the Euro-China Green and Smart City Summit, which is part of the Smart City Expo China 2018 event held in Ningbo, China.
The Expo’s theme for this year was “digital-driven intelligent development”. It provided an avenue for European guests from selected H2020 Smart Cities and Communities projects to engage with the Chinese in a series of dialogues on smart solutions and sustainable development, as well as in a business matchmaking event. The goal was to promote the digital development in China and establish new partnerships in the smart economy sector.
Other than the awarding event, Maarit Vehviläinen from Smart Tampere - representative of Tampere’s municipality in STARDUST - contributed to the panel discussion about the Smart City characteristic models. She explained in detail the Sustainable Tampere roadmap and how STARDUST and Smart Tampere play a role in achieving a smarter and more sustainable world.
The event is an important recognition of the work carried out by STARDUST’s fellow cities and the whole project’s consortium, and of how this work is providing solutions that can be adapted in various cities all over the world.
