The general objective of EduFootprint Project is to better manage, plan and monitor the energy consumption in public buildings in the Mediterranean area.   Specifically, EduFootprint aims to reach this aim working focused in public school buildings with an innovative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, considering not just direct energy impacts of buildings (consumption), but also indirect ones (public procurement or general human awareness and behaviour).

Statistically, 40 percent of energy consumption and 36 percent of emissions come from buildings.   Although this has prompted energy efficiency to become one of the EU’s top priorities and led the EU to acknowledge that buildings are key to achieving its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95 percent by 2050, it is not always easy to encourage deep renovation.

As building envelopes and mechanical and electrical equipment become more efficient, the impact of occupants on building energy increases.   Meanwhile trends in teleworking, co-working, and home-sharing mean vastly different occupancy than the standard occupancy schedules.   Finally, global expectations for comfort are increasing, while a variety of new technologies may or may not succeed in meeting this demand.

Within the framework of the achievement of both 2030 energy efficiency targets and the 2050 EU building stock decarbonisation goal, the pressure put on the shoulders of the actors involved in the energy renovation value chain is undeniably high.   And while many EU funded projects aim at the same goal, namely bridging the gap between the supply and demand in the energy retrofit market, how market-responsive are they?
