Decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector is a major challenge to reach carbon neutrality in a near future. One solution is to provide renewable and low carbon heat thanks to district energy. Today’s most advanced 4th and 5th generation district heating and cooling (DHC) systems run at low temperature, allowing less heat loss through pipes, and the use of local heat sources. This means less CO2 emissions and the development of greener local economy.

In Valencia's maritime area, state-of-the art technologies are being used to improve energy efficiency in buildings and to change collective behaviours   In many European cities the rational use of energy is one of the main issues for public and private buildings. The City Council of Valencia has decided to use innovative technologies, such as energy consumption sensors, to reduce energy demand and air pollution.

The Technical Expert Group (TEG) on Sustainable Finance has released its final recommendations to the European Commission on the EU Taxonomy. EIT Climate-KIC was represented in the EU Taxonomy’s work group by EIT Climate-KIC Board Member Sandrine Dixson Decleve and EIT Climate-KIC Head of International Affairs Felicity Spors.

Engineers in Spain are working to produce urban models based on data from cities that have introduced innovative solutions in the energy field. The aim is to enable other towns to replicate the technologies adopted and boost smart cooperation   Some European cities lack ideas about innovative solutions for the production, use and distribution of energy. However, help may come from other urban centres that have already developed such solutions.

The project ‘Our Buildings’, supported by the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), aims at developing capacity and transferring knowledge to enable municipalities and civil society to integrate building renovation strategies in local and National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) in Romania and Bulgaria.

FEDARENE attended the ASSISES conference on energy transition from the 28th to the 30th of January 2020 in Bordeaux, France. On the second day, the FEDARENE team conducted the talk on New financing services for energy transition in territories, where the EU City Facility (EUCF) was presented.

The scope of the Geocluster strategic network is to investigate the potential application of 4RinEU deep renovation approach in three different EU contexts (Poland, Hungary and Ireland).   In each country, an Early Adopter team made of local experts and stakeholders involved in the deep renovation process will draft a feasibility study on a sample building with the support of 4RinEU project partners.

Built environment professionals have a compelling opportunity to help manage the risks arising from climate change and its impact on European cities. By Dr. Leyre Echevarría Icaza MRICS   Climate change is already resulting in major global changes in precipitation and temperature patterns, together with the alteration of sea levels. In Europe wet regions will become wetter, dry regions will become drier and the frequency and intensity of heat waves, heavy precipitation and droughts will increase.
