Homeowners in Birmingham, Sunderland, London Borough of Sutton and Stroud will be testing out new ways to finance whole house energy makeovers under the Government’s £4m Pay As You Save scheme. Following an open competition, Birmingham City Council, Gentoo Sunderland, British Gas, B&Q UK and Stroud District Council have been chosen to deliver individual projects in the first ever UK trials. Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband said:

The Aldersgate Group is a strategic coalition of businesses, NGOs, think tanks and individuals, who believe in that high environmental standards are essential for future economic growth and competitiveness. A key recommendation is that all major environmental policies should be accompanied with a corresponding skills strategy. The Government should also: provide sufficient investment for training, make the training institutions fit for purpose, drive demand for environmental skills, reform its communication strategy The most significant driver for low carbon skills is a robust government industrial policy that encourages investment in low carbon technology and resource efficiency.

The Department’s London headquarters also published today its latest monthly energy efficiency rating for October which is a ‘D’. Compared to this time last year, DECC has reduced its use of gas by 90% and its use of electricity by 22%.
