A greater uptake of smart technologies is expected to lead to significant, cost-effective energy savings, while also helping to improve indoor comfort in a manner that enables the building to adjust to the needs of the user.   Smart buildings have also been identified and acknowledged as key enablers of future energy systems for which there will be a larger share of renewables, distributed supply and demand-side energy flexibility.

Less than 2% of properties sold in Ireland between January 2017 and October 2018 were A rated – the highest energy efficient rating for homes – despite many technologies available to upgrade homes. And just 11% of dishwashers and 14% of fridges sold in 2018 in Spain were of the highest A+++ energy rating for appliances. The findings come from a project called CONSEED, which investigates what encourages people to buy energy efficient appliances, houses and cars.

Concept   Partner States from 13 countries are working together in the transnational European Cooperation Programme for the Mediterranean area, The Interreg MED Programme 2014-2020.   The transnational setup allows them to tackle challenges beyond national borders, such as the rise of low carbon economy, the protection of natural and cultural resources and the strengthening of innovation.

The general objective of EduFootprint Project is to better manage, plan and monitor the energy consumption in public buildings in the Mediterranean area.   Specifically, EduFootprint aims to reach this aim working focused in public school buildings with an innovative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, considering not just direct energy impacts of buildings (consumption), but also indirect ones (public procurement or general human awareness and behaviour).

Using 3D modelling software, layering it with data, and working very closely with all partners in construction and engineering projects is critical if European companies are to survive in the challenging and rapidly changing market.   Building information modelling (BIM) is a digital information management approach. It means a more efficient use of resources, more effective communications and therefore collaboration within the partnership, greater flexibility and improved long-term planning.
