Our buildings help define our cities – from our iconic skylines to our historic architecture. They are where our citizens, live, work, study and play. These buildings are also one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for over half of total city emissions on average, and a significant source of air pollution. Currently, half a million people die each year due to outdoor air pollution caused by energy used in buildings.

This is the main objective of RELaTED concept, that will provide an innovative system of decentralized Ultra-Low Temperature (ULT) network solution that can pave the way for expanding and modernizing existing district heating networks.

The Project District heating (DH) systems are one of the most energy efficient heating systems to deliver heat in urban environments, with proven reliability within many decades already. DHs are also identified as key systems to achieve the de-carbonization of heating energy in European Cities. Renewable and waste heat sources are foreseen at the same time as de-carbonized heat sources and the way to guarantee competitive energy costs with limited influence of fossil fuel supply price volatility.

The project (planned for completion in 2019) is part of a study that compares the practical comparisons of different energy concepts for highly efficient, ecological and economically operated multi-family dwellings. One goal here is to achieve the lowest possible energy and heating demand in the operation of the building. For this purpose, different variants were already planned and selected for the construction, such as heating system and building shell according to the latest research findings.
