In the EU, air pollution is responsible for around 400,000 premature deaths every year. Poor air quality can lead to lung cancer, strokes, heart attacks and acute respiratory diseases in children.    Poland’s Małopolska region, along with parts of Czechia and Slovakia, is one of Europe’s most polluted areas. Pollution is particularly heavy in winter when, to keep their homes warm, people burn coal and sometimes waste, releasing smog into the air that threatens people’s health.

Since the start of All Saints' Day 2017, students in Secondary 5 and 6 of the  College "Notre-Dame de bon secours" in Binche are the first in Belgium to take classes in a building isolated with straw and wooden frame.   A spacious, bright, and healthy pavilion has replaced a prefabricated sheet metal energy wastage. This pavilion is the first prefabricated school building made of wood, compressed straw and clay plaster in French-speaking Belgium.

This scheme will support these communities to deliver energy upgrades to nearly 700 homes and 570 community and commercial buildings in their local area, eliminating 34,676 tonnes of CO2 annually – this is the equivalent of taking more than 11,000 internal combustion engine cars off the road.   Reducing emissions from buildings is a key action under the government's Climate Action Plan.

The grants are part of a EUR 100,000 project funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) under a Memorandum of Understanding signed in July with the Secretariat for Energy, Construction, and Transportation of the provincial government.   Vojvodina Deputy Prime Minister Đorđe Milićević said the grants mark the beginning of years-long effort to conduct energy efficiency audits at all 3,000 public buildings in Vojvodina.

We spend up to 90 percent of our time in buildings. This should already be a sufficient argument to make sure that buildings are not only understood as functional places to reside, but also as an environment, with people as the central focus. Buildings have a massive impact on our health, ability to recuperate and our productivity.
