It aims at showing that major changes in school architecture are becoming visible and inspire national projects to sustainability and energy efficiency.

Auf der Fachtagung „Schulgebäude in Passivhausbauweise – Herausforderungen und Chancen bei Planung, Betrieb und Nutzung“ werden Ergebnisse aus dem Projekt „Passivhaus-Schulen werden aktiv“ (Laufzeit 2015-2017) präsentiert. Innerhalb des Projektes wurden knapp 30, in Passivhaus-Bauweise gebaute Schulen hinsichtlich der Herausforderungen und Stärken in Betrieb und Nutzung untersucht. In Halle (Saale), a plus-energy school was built as a sustainable and ecological construction made with a timber frame and cellulose insulation in accordance with the Passive House standard. The building replaces the old existing site of the St. Franziskus-Elementary School in the surrounding area. The new school is a three-storey building with two interconnected structures: the after-school care and class area (west structure), as well as the administrative wing with the school canteen and caretaker's apartment (east structure).

Die österreichische Energieagentur hat einen Schulwettbewerb zu den Themen erneuerbare Energie, neue Technologien und Energieeffizienz gestartet. Während die Volksschüler bei einem Mal- und Zeichenwettbewerb ihr Haus der Zukunft kreieren, gestalten die Schüler der Unter- und Oberstufe ihre eigene Zeitung zu den genannten Themen. Der letzte Abgabetermin ist der 7. April 2017, die Gewinner werden am  17. Mai 2017 im Rahmen der 40-Jahres-Feier der Österreichischen Energieagentur prämiert.

The new Sankt Franziskus elementary school in Halle went into use in February 2014. A scientific monitoring was initiated to evaluate the energy concept. The results show that the wood constructed school uses 90% less heating energy than comparable schools in Germany. The building envelope including box-type windows meets the passive house requirements. The school is heated by an air-heating system with district heating as energy source. The ventilation is connected to a ground-coupled heat exchanger and can be used to heat or to cool the building.
