Experts report strong growth in the global construction robots’ market between 2015 and 2020, with further growth of more than 10% in the coming years.   Robotics can benefit construction and have been in our factories for many years. This technology is now appearing on building sites where the objective is to relieve workers from repetitive, strenuous, and unsafe tasks, thereby further improving workers' safety.

Retrofitting Europe’s buildings for energy efficiency is not enough to slash the carbon footprint of the construction sector and cut emissions in time to meet the Paris climate agreement goals, according to Dr Catherine De Wolf, assistant professor of design and construction management at TU Delft in the Netherlands.   She says that we need to design buildings to make them recyclable – but doing this will require a fundamental restructure of the construction industry.

I wouldn’t call the first building I worked in very smart. My desk was in a low walled cube in the middle of the “cube city” surrounded by cinder block walls. The air quality depended on what section you were in, and the temperature varied every 20 feet. There were no crowd-based thermostats to keep everyone happy. Almost every air vent had a custom deflector taped on it to personalize the comfort of the one who applied it. If you were cold, your best option was to put on a sweater.
