According to the Renovation Wave Strategy, the buildings sector must contribute a 60% emission reduction to achieve the EU’s 2030 climate target. This requires a steep increase of deep renovations from currently 0.2% to 3% annually and a well-designed bundle of policies to overcome the distinct barriers of the sector.

In 2019, New York State lawmakers passed the most ambitious state-level climate legislation in the country—and among the most ambitious in the world. The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) mandates that New York’s electricity sector become greenhouse gas emission free by 2040 and achieve an 85% reduction in all emissions by 2050.

The current version of August 2020 is based on an initial version published in 2018. Its methodology has been evaluated in numerous projects. It raises awareness and provides guidance on the different phases of the renovation process for decision makers, such as designers, architects, engineers, customers, homeowners, building managers.

As European buildings are responsible for 36% of CO2 emissions, the subject of deep renovation of buildings has become central in its role for making Europe climate neutral by 2050. Henceforth, there is a compelling need for a new set of skills to deep renovation projects. 4RinEU MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) offers to new professionals in the construction sector a comprehensive set of lessons and training materials to develop such skills.
