Europeans spend approximately 90 % of their time in buildings. Living indoors requires energy to maintain the right temperature, to cook and to use electrical appliances. In fact, energy is expected to guarantee a healthy and comfortable environment. Of all the sectors in Europe, the building sector consumes the most energy, and thus emits the most CO2. As a result, policymakers have made buildings a priority in the EU energy policy agenda.

The Rainhof is one of the most precious rural buildings of the Gsiesertal valley (IT), at 1.500 m above sea level. Built with solid stone masonry walls and the vernacular “Blockbau” (solid wood) construction, the building presents many traditional features, such as windows with deep reveals, decorated painted frames around the windows, and vaulted ceilings. The project was awarded the 1st prize at the Bauern(h)auszeichnung - ITAS-Preis 2016 for the best renovation of a farmhouse in Südtirol.

Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 requires decarbonising the whole economy, including the energy-hungry heating sector, says Finland’s Riku Huttunen. And that will involve cooperation at all levels of government, including local and EU authorities, he argues.
Heating represents almost half (40%) of the EU’s total energy consumption. As such, it is also responsible for a large share of greenhouse gas emissions. Yet, politicians seem reluctant to confront the issue head-on.

Since the start of All Saints' Day 2017, students in Secondary 5 and 6 of the College "Notre-Dame de bon secours" in Binche are the first in Belgium to take classes in a building isolated with straw and wooden frame.
A spacious, bright, and healthy pavilion has replaced a prefabricated sheet metal energy wastage. This pavilion is the first prefabricated school building made of wood, compressed straw and clay plaster in French-speaking Belgium.

The 2030 Framework for climate and energy sets as EU-wide targets for 2030 a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 level, and at least a 27% share of renewable energy consumption. For the power system, this means a share of at least 45% of electricity demand generated from renewable sources (European Commission), compared to 27.5% in 2014 (Eurostat).

In 2017, renewable energy accounted for 19.5 % of the total energy used for heating and cooling in the European Union. This is a significant increase from 10.4 % in 2004. Increases in industrial sectors, services and households contributed to this growth. Aerothermal, geothermal and hydrothermal heat energy captured by heat pumps was also taken into account if reported by countries.

Political and business leaders from around the world have outlined the far-reaching geopolitical implications of an energy transformation driven by the rapid growth of renewable energy. A report recently launched by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says that the geopolitical and socio-economic consequences of a new energy age may be as profound as those which accompanied the shift from biomass to fossil fuels two centuries ago.
