Overall environmental impacts of nZEBs are substantially lower than conventional buildings. This is the conclusion of a new AZEB study in which the environmental performance of 3 AZEB case studies was evaluated using life cycle assessment (LCA).
The combination of LCA with optimization methods facilitates decisions to minimize environmental impacts of nZEBs, while keeping the costs as low as possible.

AZEB studied the use of indicators for measuring the social performance of a building. The social performance of two AZEB case studies, in Spain and Bulgaria, was investigated.
The study shows how the European standard could aid decision making for cost-effective nZEB development.

The AZEB methodology organizes the sometimes overwhelming amount of existing solutions for affordable nZEBs and intends to facilitate both decision makers and experts in their projects.
Each of the 27 steps in the methodology represents a set of important and unique activities and/or decisions which help to create affordable nZEBs. They are organized within the four main project phases: initiative, design, construction and use & maintenance.
