user behaviour

The project REScoop Plus has enabled a better understanding of how consumers change their energy consumption behaviour when they join a renewable energy cooperative, a so-called REScoop. A new online toolbox features coaching tools for individuals to reduce their personal consumption and district heating tools to provide collective heat efficiently. The toolbox is free to use for all interested renewable energy cooperatives.

While energy efficiency via retrofitting old buildings and giving more control to citizens over their energy demand are part of the Cologne project, just as they are in many other European cities, the CO2 emissions produced by urban traffic are also a major headache.    Cologne has identified four possible solutions that, when implemented, should reduce traffic emissions by a targeted 60%:

Less than 2% of properties sold in Ireland between January 2017 and October 2018 were A rated – the highest energy efficient rating for homes – despite many technologies available to upgrade homes. And just 11% of dishwashers and 14% of fridges sold in 2018 in Spain were of the highest A+++ energy rating for appliances. The findings come from a project called CONSEED, which investigates what encourages people to buy energy efficient appliances, houses and cars.

As building envelopes and mechanical and electrical equipment become more efficient, the impact of occupants on building energy increases.   Meanwhile trends in teleworking, co-working, and home-sharing mean vastly different occupancy than the standard occupancy schedules.   Finally, global expectations for comfort are increasing, while a variety of new technologies may or may not succeed in meeting this demand.

Buildings are responsible for approximately 40 % of energy consumption and 36 % of CO2 emissions in the EU, according to the European Commission. It’s also widely accepted that to reduce the amount of energy used, consumers have to change their behaviour.   But old habits die hard, especially when it comes to making sacrifices for the environment.
