Our living environments have a tremendous impact on our health and wellbeing. Ensuring their suitability and adaptability to people’s needs and preferences – including when these needs and preferences evolve over time – is one of the most effective approaches to respond to challenges brought to us by Europe’s ageing demographics. However, a huge share of the building stock is not adapted to permit older persons to age in place. Even today’s new constructions are often not prepared to support health and wellbeing over the life course.

The theme of the 2019 UP STRAW YEARBOOK is ’the straw experience to learn in’. It aims to inform and inspire you about the application of straw as a building material in schools and educational buildings. The article we highlight today comes from Belgium. Interview of the Assistant Director of Notre-Dame du Bon Secours College in Binche, the first school in Belgium to be insulated using straw, and built in 2017.   How did you come up with the idea of using straw in construction?

The RE4 project has reached its end. The research project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. The RE4 project was based on a collaboration of 13 partners from science and industry.   The main goal was reuse and recycle of CDW materials and structures in energy efficient pREfabricated elements for building refurbishment and construction.

Straw building techniques that use straw bales will, inevitably, give a minimal wall thickness related to the bale size.  In the sports hall renovation project at Tilburg, with 1 000 m² wall, this could lead to higher costs and performance than required.

The purpose of the calculator is to build an energy pathway that hits the 80% CO2 emission reduction target at the top of the page. As you get closer to achieving this the arrow will move to the right.   The calculator models what is thought to be physically and technically possible in forty-two different sectors. It is based on scientific and engineering data and was built in collaboration with a wide range of organisations from inside and outside of government.

Buildings are one of the main causes of the emission of greenhouse gases in the world; in Europe, for example, they are responsible for more than 30% of emissions, or about 900 million tons of CO2 per year. Heating and air conditioning are mainly responsible for greenhouse gas emissions in buildings.
