Environmental issues related to buildings

The Commission is in the process of updating some of the content on this website in light of the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. If the site contains content that does not yet reflect the withdrawal of the United Kingdom, it is unintentional and will be addressed.

A King’s College London research study seeks to determine whether and how real estate companies are complying with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, the role of the real estate sector in achieving the European Union’s climate impact portfolio, and the environmental outputs for European buildings complying with the EPBD.

OVERVIEW   Making Europe “fit for the digital age” is an undertaking that requires cooperation and collaboration. This has only become more evident in 2020, when unprecedented disruption has demanded a reconfiguration of how businesses run, how public administrations operate, and how citizens go about their daily lives.

Retrofitting Europe’s buildings for energy efficiency is not enough to slash the carbon footprint of the construction sector and cut emissions in time to meet the Paris climate agreement goals, according to Dr Catherine De Wolf, assistant professor of design and construction management at TU Delft in the Netherlands.   She says that we need to design buildings to make them recyclable – but doing this will require a fundamental restructure of the construction industry.

Surface area is an important but limited resource in cities that aim to become climate neutral. It can be used to, for example, generate heat or electricity via active solar systems, improve air quality via greening, or provide cooling thanks to highly reflective and emissive materials.   Scientists at Italian institute Eurac have now developed a multi-factor approach to study the synergies and conflicts that arise from using ground, facade and roof space in urban communities.

CO2 emissions increased to 9.95 GtCO2 in 2019. The sector accounts for 38% of all energy-related CO2 emissions when adding building construction industry emissions. Direct building CO2 emissions need to halve by 2030 to get on track for net zero carbon building stock by 2050. Governments must prioritize low-carbon buildings in pandemic stimulus packages and updated climate pledges.

Buildings account for 40% of the EU’s energy consumption and 36% of its greenhouse gas emissions. The EU knows that improving their energy efficiency is vital for achieving its 2050 climate targets under the European Green Deal.    And its recent EU Renovation Wave Strategy, which aims to double renovation rates over the next ten years, will also ensure that these renovations lead to higher energy and resource efficiency.
