Heating and cooling accounts for almost half of global energy consumption. With most of this relying fossil fuels, however, it contributes heavily to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. In parts of the world lacking modern energy access, meanwhile, inefficient biomass use for cooking also harms people’s health, damages the environment and reduces social well-being.

Concept:   Adequate warmth, cooling and lighting and the energy to power appliances are essential in a home.   Energy poverty is associated with a range of adverse consequences for people’s health and well-being, exacerbated by low temperatures and stress associated with unaffordable energy bills.

Concept:   Regional and local authorities need to precisely determine, control and demonstrate their sustainable energy and climate actions to increase their efficiency.   The EU-funded ENERGee Watch project will support peer-to-peer learning for municipal and regional associations and networks to understand how different sustainable energy and climate mitigation actions have been controlled and assessed.

Concept and objectives:   Buildings account for around 40% of total energy use and 36% of CO2 emissions in Europe .   According to the recast Directive on the energy performance of buildings (EPBD) all new buildings after 2020 should reach nearly zero energy levels, meaning that they should demonstrate very low energy needs mainly covered by renewable energy sources.

Concept:   The achievement of the EU climate targets for 2030 will be facilitated by the widespread adoption of renewable energy. Hosting capacity can be reached through the market uptake of citizen energy communities (CEC).   The EU-funded LIGHTNESS project will increase the renewable energy capacity through social engagement, a regulatory roadmap, a low-cost technological package and innovative business models.

Economic crises present an opportunity for governments to take action on climate change.   The lockdown responses to the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a fall in emissions—global CO2 emissions are expected to be about 8% lower in 2020 than in 2019, in line with the required 7.6% reduction needed each year through 2030 to keep temperature increases below 1.5°C, compared with pre-industrial levels.
