"Commercial buildings consume 18 percent of the energy and 35 percent of electricity used in the U.S. each year. A focus on improving energy efficiency in existing buildings is the best way to address carbon reduction goals being set by a growing number of organizations."

Kitchen extensions were the most popular home improvement (13%), closely followed by conservatories (12%) and attic conversions (10%). Shelter and RIBA released the research to coincide with the launch this week of Architect in the House, a successful fundraising initiative now in its 14th year, in which architects nationwide offer free hour-long consultations to the public in return for a £40 suggested donation to Shelter. So far, the scheme has raised over £1 million for homeless and badly housed families and helped 50,000 homeowners realise their home improvement aspirations.

A joint initiative between the national housing and regeneration agency, CLG and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), LCIF enables new and existing homes to be connected to low carbon community heating networks that use more environmentally friendly sources of energy than traditional methods to provide heat and power to homes, shops and businesses nearby. This new funding is in addition to the £21m announced last year by the HCA for 13 pioneering community heating projects around the country.

The conference was supported by European Parliament’s URBAN intergroup and hosted by the group’s president Jan Olbryct in cooperation with the Polish the Europe is simple” association, the City of Katowice and the Association of Polish Cities. As Intergroup president, Olbrycht is playing an active role in encouraging increased take up of the potential 4 % of European regional Development Funding which can be used by European regions for energy efficiency in housing.

The offering to business – CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme launched today aimed at saving public and private sector organisations around £1billion per year by 2020 through cost effective energy efficiency measures that are not yet being taken up. The aim of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is to help change behaviour and will require large public and private sector organisations like supermarkets, hotels, hospitals, local authorities and central government departments, to improve their energy efficiency.

The Committee's report is a stocktake of performance in tackling fuel poverty and sets out areas of concern which the Committee want to see addressed in the new Parliament.  Paddy Tipping MP, Acting Chair of the Committee, said "one of the reasons tackling fuel poverty is so difficult, is that the Government does not have a clear idea about who the fuel poor are.  Because it does not have that information, it has to use age and receipt of benefits as proxies for fuel poverty, and that means that some people who are fuel poor do not get help, while others who are not in fuel poverty...
