Decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector is a major challenge to reach carbon neutrality in a near future. One solution is to provide renewable and low carbon heat thanks to district energy. Today’s most advanced 4th and 5th generation district heating and cooling (DHC) systems run at low temperature, allowing less heat loss through pipes, and the use of local heat sources. This means less CO2 emissions and the development of greener local economy.

The European Commission launched the competition for 2023 European Green Capital (EGCA 2023) and the 2022 European Green Leaf (EGLA 2022) Awards, recognising cities that are genuinely committed to becoming more sustainable. This year, the financial prize for both Awards will be significantly increased to a combined one million euro, aimed at supporting cities in putting in place urban sustainability measures. The EGCA 2023 winning city will receive €600 000, while up to two EGLA 2022 winning towns/cities will receive €200 000 each.

Do you know about the D2Grids project yet? This video is an opportunity to understand the functioning and potentialities of 5th generation heating and cooling networks. From the use of renewable energy to the recycling of different sources of heat, 5GDHC participates in the decarbonation of our society!   About D2Grids The project "demand-driven grids" (D2GRIDS), funded under Interreg North West Europe (NWE) programme, aims to develop 5th generation urban heating and cooling networks (5GDHC) in European cities. The project will last over 3 years (2018-2022).

Behaviour change – reducing emissions by changing how we live our lives – should be part of every government and think tank’s sustainable scenario, explains Schalk Cloete. That’s because impressive advances in energy efficiency and clean energy won’t be enough to contain the emissions of a world continuing with the essential task of lifting billions of people out of poverty.
