In general terms, the Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the allocation of unique identifiers (such as IP addresses) to physical objects. Those identifiers enable objects to connect to a network allowing the transfer of data to and from those entities. These objects can potentially be anything: people, animals, vehicles, plants, appliances, building components, etc., and they are often described as smart objects, for example, a smart meter, a smart phone, a smart home, etc.

The EU Energy Efficiency Directive requires Member States to submit long-term strategies for mobilising investment in the renovation of building stock within their National Energy Efficiency Plans. Recent changes to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) require the adoption of long-term renovation strategies as part of the National Energy and Climate Plans. The amended EPBD shows a clearer path towards achieving low- and zero-emission building stock in the EU by 2050, underpinned by national roadmaps and public and private investment.

The EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), organised by the European Commission, is the biggest event dedicated to renewable energy sources and efficient energy use in Europe.   It brings together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers to promote initiatives to save energy and move towards renewables for clean, secure and efficient power. The event provides a unique platform for sharing ideas and knowhow, to showcase projects, network and gain immediate feedback from policymakers and citizens alike.

The EU launched the BUILD UP Skills initiative in 2011 to answer to the lack of adequate construction skills which hampers the developmennt of NZEBs and effective renovations. This initiative aimed to increase the number of qualified trade professionals by developing national qualification platforms and roadmaps, and providing training in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy in buildings.
