The annual rate of home and commercial building renovation is well under the 3% required to achieve European climate and energy goals.  There is a need to accelerate investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions to boost cost-effective building renovation benefiting all Europeans.

The general objective of EduFootprint Project is to better manage, plan and monitor the energy consumption in public buildings in the Mediterranean area.   Specifically, EduFootprint aims to reach this aim working focused in public school buildings with an innovative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, considering not just direct energy impacts of buildings (consumption), but also indirect ones (public procurement or general human awareness and behaviour).

Statistically, 40 percent of energy consumption and 36 percent of emissions come from buildings.   Although this has prompted energy efficiency to become one of the EU’s top priorities and led the EU to acknowledge that buildings are key to achieving its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95 percent by 2050, it is not always easy to encourage deep renovation.

The report Creating an Energy Efficient Mortgage for Europe: The Supporting Role of the Green Building Sector sets out roadmap for market development with potential to transform millions of buildings across Europe.   In order to grow the market so that energy efficient mortgages will be made available to every borrower in Europe, the finance and the green building sector must work together more closely.
