Friday 11th June 2021, 14:00-16:30 CET   Extensive research studies in many countries have found gaps between the design intent and real-world operation of buildings, which often lead to much higher energy use in practice than was estimated at design stage. While the reasons for such performance gaps are varied and complex, IEA Energy in Buildings and Communities (EBC) research projects have recently been making progress in resolving them.

The digitalisation of existing buildings is yet far from being generalised. In consequence, building occupants and owners have limited knowledge and understanding of their building as an energy system, and how their behaviour can impact it. Smart technologies represent a strong lever to increase the energy efficiency in buildings in the short term and with limited investments, in an approach that is complementary to longer-term deep renovation projects.

The attached infographics made by the TripleA-reno project show some interesting insights about the project.   TripleA-reno is a H2020 EU-funded project running from May 2018 until April 2021. It raises awareness and provides guidance on the different phases of the renovation process for decision makers, such as designers, architects, engineers, customers, homeowners, building managers.

As European buildings are responsible for 36% of CO2 emissions, the subject of deep renovation of buildings has become central in its role for making Europe climate neutral by 2050. Henceforth, there is a compelling need for a new set of skills to deep renovation projects. 4RinEU MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) offers to new professionals in the construction sector a comprehensive set of lessons and training materials to develop such skills.

Tuesday 1 June 2021, 15:00-16:45 CET   The current development in building energy efficiency towards nZEB buildings represents a number of new challenges to design and construction.   One of these major challenges is the increased need for cooling in these highly insulated and airtight buildings, which is not only present in the summer period but also in the shoulder seasons and in offices even in midwinter.

As Europe contends with the Covid-19 pandemic, exposure to indoor air has been rising, with people spending up to 90% of time indoors. Indoor air quality is a crucial element of resilience against respiratory disease. Insufficiently burned fuel in old stoves and mold often pollute the air making buildings unhealthy to live in. These households are often the most vulnerable to price increases and decreasing job opportunities during the pandemic.

Evidence points out that most vulnerable households face major challenges in the renovation of their homes. Lowest-income families live in most energy-inefficient homes, according to research by the Vlaams Steunpunt Wonen. This means that the cost of reaching renovation energy efficiency standards ends to be highest for those with the least.
