Welcome to the November 2019 issue of the TightVent Europe newsletter! In this edition we present the highlights of the 2019 joint AIVC – TightVent – venticool conference “From Energy crisis to sustainable indoor climate – 40 years of AIVC" held on 15 & 16 October 2019 in Ghent, Belgium i.e. a summary of the airtightness track of the event and news from the TAAC meeting held right after the conference.

Aerogels are open-porous, high-performance thermal insulation materials that can be used for very thinbuilding insulation. So far, the application conditions of these materials and their potential in heritagebuildings have not yet been described comprehensively. This review shows the technical properties ofcommercially available aerogel materials – such as blankets, boards and renders – and their use scenariosin heritage buildings, taking into account the heritage criteria of authenticity, integrity, reversibility andcompatibility.

CEN-CE team organized under the leadership of REHVA the 2nd CEN-CE Stakeholders' Workshop on 4 November (10h00-12h30) during REHVA Brussels Summit (4-5 November) for enquiring, engaging and exploring synergies with key stakeholders across Europe about the CEN-CE training and certification scheme for identifying the best solution for the buildings sector in terms of EU-wide roll out strategy.

Over the years, the CA EPBD has been collecting a wealth of information useful to EPBD national policy experts and other stakeholders. The most recent key public outputs of the CA EPBD are now gathered in the present database of publications, which will be regularly updated to reflect further developments.

To support the professional execution of nearly zero-energy buildings new pilot “Train the Trainer” courses were implemented in Austria, Hungary, the Netherlands and Slovakia for flat roofer, ventilation installer and building inspection.

The European Commission aims to analyse the competitiveness of the European heating and cooling industry. Four case studies of successful and competitive deployment of heating and cooling solutions at a city level from selected organizations support this analysis. The case studies aim to illustrate how competitive renewable energy technologies such as solar-thermal, biomass, biogas and heat pump are in the context of different local factors across Europe, and what are their impacts on local communities.

Proper technology solution-sets (the gears in the picture) can enable a regenerative indoor environment for building users and for the Planet. Technologies will be the key to promote a shift of paradigm in building design from the “less bad” to the “more regenerative”

According to Eurostat 2017, 42% of the European population currently live in flats (condominiums, multi-owned properties, tenements, social housing, etc.). Retrofitting condominiums (tenements and flatted buildings) is highly strategic for local authorities, as a large number of private owners can be reached at the same time. Once the retrofitting is done, co-owners benefit from comfortable homes as well as from financial and carbon savings.
