The Latvian GDP grew by 4.8% during 2018, the highest GDP growth rate since 2010. The growth was driven by consumer spending and strong investment levels supported by EU fund inflows.

In Bulgaria, around 1,400 buildings are being renovated and retrofitted since 2017 according to the Bulgarian Construction Chamber (BCC) as nearly 70% of the building stock was built before 1979.   The successful improvement of building performance and the adoption of renewable energy are especially challenging due to the skills shortage in the Bulgarian construction sector – a sector which accounts for 14.4% of Bulgarian GDP.

Two projects called BERTIM and MORE-CONNECT have demonstrated ways of retrofitting prefabricated façade and roof panels that incorporate energy efficiency improvements. This kind of offsite construction means building renovations take less time on the building site, as little as a couple of days.

As a visible sign of the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energies, a former coal silo and heating plant in Basel is covered with coloured PV modules. The entire site is under heritage protection, the remodelled building was required to match the style and colour scheme of the site.

Collectively, buildings in the EU are responsible for 40% of our energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions, which mainly stem from construction, usage, renovation and demolition. Improving energy efficiency in buildings therefore has a key role to play in achieving the ambitious goal of carbon-neutrality by 2050, set out in the European Green Deal.

Mercado del Val is an iron market located within the old town of Valladolid. Its construction was completed in 1882. The rectangular floor plan is 120 meters long times 19 meters wide, with chamfered corners. It had stones for foundations and plinth and iron for the other elements. Natural ventilation was performed through openings covered by blinds of iron sheets.

BPIE and national Green Building Councils for the H2020 project Build Upon2 published 8 factsheets discussing the initiatives of long-term renovation strategies of 8 countries (Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, Turkey and the UK).
