Energy Performance Certificate (EPCs) are one of the best available sources of information on Europe’s building stock, and if improved, can support the launch of a Renovation Wave in Europe.   The EPC is one of the EU’s main existing instruments to facilitate the long-term decarbonisation of the building stock; however, to exploit its full potential, we need to overcome some hurdles, such as inadequate data gathering, lack of compliance, low reliability, different definitions and calculation methods.

On the 1st of May, Denmark's Social Democratic Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, made a crucial announcement that relieved many public housing companies in Denmark: a proposal to activate 30 billion DKK from the Landsbyggefonden (the National Building Fund) to renovation of social housing during 2020-2026. Of these, 18.4 billion DKK (2.4 billion €) will be used to renovate the 72,000-social housing in the fund's support queue. The remaining 11.6 billion DKK (1.5 billion €) will serve future renovations until 2026, with the focus on the green transition.

The renovation of the residential complex of Via Brescia is one of the interventions developed within the FP7 Smart City project SINFONIA.   The building is divided in 5 staircases with 7 floors and 21 apartments each, with an overall surface of around 32,000 m3 and it is managed by IPES-WOBI, the social housing Institute of the Province of Bolzano.

On 20th April EBC Vice-President Philip van Nieuwenhuizen joined a follow-up call with EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton and other construction stakeholders to discuss about the COVID-19 impact on the construction sector. In particular, participants focused on the situation in the construction market, the current and future economic consequences across the value chain, and the needs for policy intervention for the exit and recovery strategies.

An important public building in the most populated city of Zagreb county, Velika Gorica, this kindergarten was in need of energy renovation as it was expensive to run and uncomfortable for its occupants.  Having become an eco-school, the management realised that energy renovation was essential to underpin the new ethos of the school.
