Nanoscience and nanotechnology are interdisciplinary fields that bring together physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and engineers to meet the potential future challenges that humankind will face, including the search for renewable energies for sustainable development and new technologies for carbon capture and environmental protection. Among the current subjects in nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanomaterials are developing fast and explosively and attracting a huge amount of attention.

European Union’s energy targets for 2030 include the transformation of the building stock to Nearly Zero Energy Buildings - nZEBs. NZEBs are characterized by reduced net-energy demand, where most of their energy needs are met by renewable energy sources, especially Photovoltaics. Consequently, in the following years, a considerable amount of intermittent solar generators will be connected in the electrical grid posing new challenges concerning the secure and reliable grid operation.

In the framework of the PV-ESTIA project, the performance of the proposed PV+storage Innovative Management Scheme will be evaluated under real-field conditions. Pilot installations will be selected with the aim to examine if and how the size of the Energy Storage Systems and the different geographical conditions affect the performance of the innovative management scheme. The pilot installations include the following cities:

The consumer’s behaviour regarding their own energy needs will change in the future. Energy users won’t just be simple electricity, gas or heat consumers anymore but prosumers who produce energy through, for example, photovoltaic panels (a.k.a: solar panels) installed on or around their houses and using innovative equipment such as heat pumps, energy storage devices (i.e: batteries) and electric vehicles that will interact with the energy market through different pricing mechanisms such as time variable tariffs.

Located in the Cité universitaire de Paris, the Maison de l'Ile de France is the first eco-campus in the capital. The project is exemplary and implements a high energy performance strategy to meet ZEN objectives (Zero Energy, Zero Carbon, Zero Nuclear Waste) and thus anticipate the thermal regulations of 2020.
