Construction industry stakeholders and policy makers gathered on 29 January in Brussels to discuss the potential of natural bio-based materials to help Europe meet its climate obligations.   The event was organised by the Horizon 2020 project ISOBIO, which hopes its innovations will be a game changer for bio-based construction.

The project PEGASUS was successfully launched in February 2017 and it will last until the end of July 2019. The project brings together 10 project partners from 9 countries: Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia, France, Spain, Malta, Croatia and Belgium.

Long-term building renovation strategies will be key to supporting the decarbonisation of the EU building stock while National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) outline measures contributing to reaching these targets. What does this mean for research and innovation in the building renovation sector? In recent years energy efficiency of the building stock has been recognised as a significant route to contribute towards meeting the European Union’s energy targets, by reducing energy demand and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Furthermore, improvements in energy efficiency across the built stock can provide energy security by lessening the reliance on external suppliers and increases energy affordability, which has numerous social benefits.

The recently revised EU Renewable Energy Directive recognises heating and cooling as a key sector in accelerating the decarbonisation of the energy system. In order to facilitate the penetration of renewable energy in the heating and cooling sector, each Member State is required to increase the share of renewable energy supplied for heating and cooling by an indicative 1.3 percentage points as a yearly average for the periods of 2021-2025 and 2026-2030.

This paper describes the evolution of the thermal network and its applications for making simplified thermal models of buildings by means of thermal resistances (R) and capacitances (C). In the literature, there are several modelling schemes for buildings. Here, we investigate the advantages, disadvantages, and improvements of thermal networks.
