The university city of Freiburg is home to an innovative city hall that is now the biggest surplus-energy building in Europe. The building boasts outstanding thermal insulation that allows for low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling. To minimise energy demand, the building is fitted with a ventilation system that uses heat recovery. The building is heated and cooled efficiently by using energy in the ground water.

In 2011, a detached house built in Mühltal outside Darmstadt in the 1970s became the first of its kind to be restored and converted into an ‘surplus energy’ house complete with electric vehicle technology. Following the redevelopment, the building generates more energy than it requires. But this was not achieved by cramming the house full of new technology. It adheres to the highest interior standards and has a classic, timeless feel about it.

When Elobau conducted a study for its new production building, one key consideration was its energy vision: that if possible, the new facility should rely entirely on renewable energy. The brief was not just to see if it would be possible to achieve a positive primary energy rating, but also to be as autonomous as possible in terms of heating, cooling and electricity.

Couvrant une surface de 1’348 m² au sol, le bâtiment détermine un volume simple, sur un seul niveau, marqué par la marquise d’entrée affirmant l’accueil des clients.
Le bâtiment est constitué d’une ossature en bois reposant sur une base en béton. Les lames en pin du nord poncées et traitées avec un saturateur couleur noyer amènent de la chaleur à cette façade en bois moderne.

This Victorian property in the centre of Chorlton had spent many years serving as 5 apartments. During this time many original features had been lost. The proposal is to return to the original use of two semi-detached homes and reinstate the beautiful original façade.

Albero project of rehabilitation, modernization and requalification of the architectural envelope is part of this urban dynamic as much by its singular aestheticism as by the proposed living environment wanted healthy and pleasant to live for future users. Sequences of access are revisited from the outside to work stations and places of relaxation by revealing and optimizing the potential of this obsolete office building. With these ambitious stakes, our response is also accompanied by a remarkable attitude.

The project embraces the thorough renovation a building from the 1930s. The CPAS of Forest Municipality of Brussels brought together its various services there in 2005. To preserve the façade (exterior walls, windows and doors), the walls have been insulated from the inside by 20 cm of cellulose.
