Leveraging local business and political ecosystems is a key component of projects like R2CITIES. Without the knock-on effect produced by ongoing engagement with localities, our core aim of replicability would be difficult to reach. Furthermore, the focus of R2CITIES is renovating residential districts, and so it is important to ensure that these end-users are able to learn about our work and how it will be beneficial in the longer term.

In accordance with this requirement “Developing Minimum Building Energy Performance Standards (MBEPS) and Nearly Zero Energy Building Approach (nZEB)” has become one of the main outcomes of “Promoting Energy Efficiency in Buildings Project” executed by General Directorate of Renewable Energy (GDRE).The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the implementing agency of the Project which is financially supported by Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Investor Confidence Project (ICP) Europe is developing a suite of building energy renovation roadmaps - Energy Performance Protocols - that aim to reduce transaction costs by assembling existing standards and practices into a consistent and transparent process. These tools then enable a marketplace for building owners, project developers, utilities, public programmes and investors to trade in standardised energy efficiency projects.

Under the European Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU, EU countries should set up an energy efficiency obligation scheme. This scheme requires energy companies to achieve yearly energy savings of 1.5% of annual sales to final consumers.In order to reach this target, companies have to carry out measures which help final consumers improve energy efficiency. This may include improving the heating system in consumers' homes, installing double glazed windows, or better insulating roofs to reduce energy consumption.

Turkey is included for the first time in Top 10 Countries for LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), the United States Green Building Council’s annual ranking that highlights countries outside of the U.S. which are making significant strides in sustainable building design, construction and transformation, illustrating the ever-growing international demand for LEED green buildings. The announcement comes at a time of increased international focus on climate change mitigation in the lead up to the United Nations' COP21 climate negotiations in December 2015.
