Buildings are more than just stand-alone units using energy from the grid. They are becoming micro energy-hubs consuming, producing, storing and supplying energy more flexibly than before. The Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE) published a briefing on the topic.

The building sector is key to achieving the transition to a low-carbon economy, and examples of industrialisation processes with positive results on the ground and reduced costs are already out there waiting to be replicated. The regulatory and business environment in which early-movers operate needs adaptation to deliver a better support for the scaling-up of these business models and to tap the available potential.

This report finds that within 15 years, a large part of the German Building stock can be renovated cost-effectively, achieving significant energy savings. This is achievable through different combinations of policy tools and targeted support measures meant to stimulate investments in the building stock.

An effective renovation strategy supported by proper financing schemes can solve vital environmental problems such as lowering CO2-emissions and improving air quality. ZEBRA2020 focuses on tracking the market transition to nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEBs) to in order to obtain recommendations and strategies for the building industry and policy makers and to accelerate the market uptake of nZEBs.
