On 21 January 2017, the town of Essen in Germany officially becomes the European Green Capital for 2017. In the official European Green Capital Handover Ceremony, Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, will hand over the title for 2017 from Ljubljana to Essen.

On 19 January 2017, Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete kicked off a two-day visit to Greece. The purpose of the visit is to follow up on the Clean Energy for All Europeans package presented by the European Commission in November 2016 and to discuss issues regarding investment in the potential for renewable energy and in energy efficient buildings.

  On 22 December 2016, the European Commission appointed the  members of the High-Level Expert Group on sustainable finance. The Group, which will start meeting as of January 2017, comprises 20 policy leaders from civil society, the finance sector and academia.

  On 8 December 2016, a new Memorandum of Understanding to enhance energy cooperation between the EU and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was signed in London, United Kingdom, by EU Commissioner Arias Cañete and EBRD President Chakrabarti.

On 2 December 2016, the European Commission released a studyon the potential and functioning of green bond markets, demonstrating that green bonds have enjoyed extraordinary growth since they were first issued in 2007. The study also identifies key bottlenecks and measures to overcome them so they can fulfill their huge potential.
