A LIFE-line for 144 innovative projects investing for a better environment and climate action.     In November 2016, the European Commission has approved an investment package of €222.7 million from the EU budget to support Europe's transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon future. The EU funding will spur additional investments leading to a total of €398.6 million to be invested into 144 new projects in 23 Member States.

On 27 October 2016, the winners of the European Business Awards for the Environment 2016-17 were announced at a ceremony in Tallinn, Estonia. The awards recognise companies in the EU and candidate countries, from all sectors that combine competitiveness with respect for the environment in the following categories: management, product and services, process innovation, business and biodiversity, and international business cooperation.

Habitat III conference that took place from 17 to 20 October 2016 in Quito, Ecuador, the European Commission has presented three commitments to meet the New Urban Agenda's global objectives. The Agenda, adopted at the conference, contains guidelines to make cities all over the world more inclusive, green, safe and prosperous.

The public consultation on the Horizon 2020 programme mid-term assessment has been launched on 20 October 2016 and will remain open until 15 January 2017. The objective of the consultation is to collect information from a wide audience on different aspects of Horizon 2020 implementation.   The consultation is open to all citizens and organisations. Contributions are particularly sought from researchers, entrepreneurs, innovators and all types of organisations that have participated in Horizon 2020.

On 15 October 2016, in Kigali, Rwanda, 197 countries struck a landmark deal to reduce the emissions of powerful greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), in a move that could prevent up to 0.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by the end of this century.

On 30 September 2016, EU ministers, in a historic move, approved the ratification of the Paris Agreement by the European Union. The decision was reached at an extraordinary meeting of the Environment Council in Brussels. This decision brings the Paris Agreement very close to entering into force.
