For many of these items it can be said that various at least partly high quality material is available in most of the EU Member States (like software tools for calculating thermal bridges, thermal bridges atlases and promotion of good practice guidance). It would be desirable that the material is used more often by building practitioners and that some countries catch up with the others. Software for calculating thermal bridges should be validated and the validation documentation should be published.

When buying a car or appliance, an energy efficiency label, usually indicating energy efficiency classes, is displayed to inform the consumer of the product's energy efficiency. When talking about energy efficiency in the built environment it is important to know how much energy is consumed by various building types. Within the EnerKey Project an EnerKey Performance Certificate for South African buildings was developed.

Am 8. März 2010 überreichten die involvierten Mitarbeiter des Fraunhofer IBP anlässlich eines Trainingsworkshops im Rathaus Johannesburg den ersten Energieausweis für das Land Südafrika. Im Rahmen des vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung BMBF geförderten Projektes »Enerkey« hat Johannesburg im ersten Schritt damit begonnen, eigene Gebäude energetisch zu bewerten. Die Bewertungsmethoden lehnen sich an die europäische Energieausweisprozedur an, die vor fünf Jahren mit Unterstützung des Fraunhofer IBP beispielhaft für Deutschland entwickelt und umgesetzt wurde.

International building legislation is setting stronger and stronger requirements for the energy performance of buildings. An actual example is the impact of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive in the European Union (EPBD) on the national requirements in the Member States. The improved energy performance of buildings can’t be achieved by additional insulation or more effective buildings systems only. A major influence factor on the energy quality is the ventilation technology and also the airtightness of the building envelope.
