Gϋnther H. Oettinger, European Commissioner for energy said: “The strength of the Covenant of Mayors is that it binds together all the local initiatives to deal with the energy challenges of the EU. These local initiatives are very promising. But we need to do more and faster and I want to help with that. For example, together with Commissioner Hahn we have increased the focus on energy efficiency and renewables in our regional policy.”

The “identity” of the 3000th city will be revealed on the occasion of the 2011 Covenant of Mayors Ceremony. To mark this special occasion, the newly-joined signatory will be offered a special prize, to be disclosed on the day of the event. The number of local authorities which have joined the Covenant, among which close to 800 are already implementing their action plans, is conferring credibility to the EU ambitions in the fight against climate change.

The CONCERTO initiative is proving that cities can, given the right planning, be transformed into pioneers in the world of energy efficiency and sustainability. The results so far have been very encouraging: CONCERTO cities have shown that through innovative technologies and an integrated approach, existing buildings can cut its CO2 emissions by up to 50%, at acceptable costs.
