On April 11, 2016 the Federal Ministries for Economic Affairs and Energy (Bundesministerien für Wirtschaft und Energie - BMWi) and Education and Research (Bundesministerien für Bildung und Forschung - BMBF) launched a new research initiative to enforce the German energy transition in the field of energy-efficient and climate-friendly buildings and city quarters. The focus of the initiative called “Solar Buildings/Energy-efficient Cities” is on technologies for increased energy efficiency and integration of renewable energy sources.

Am 11. April 2016 haben die beiden Bundesministerien für Wirtschaft und Energie (BMWi) und für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) eine neue Forschungsinitiative zur Stärkung der Energiewende ins Leben gerufen. Der Fokus der Forschungsinitiative „Solares Bauen/Energieeffiziente Stadt“ liegt auf Technologien für mehr Energieeffizienz und die Integration von erneuerbaren Energien. Die Initiative soll die Energiewende im Gebäudesektor voranbringen und dabei helfen, das Ziel Senkung des Primärenergiebedarfs im Gebäudesektor um 80 Prozent im Vergleich zum Jahr 2008 zu erreichen.

Smart Energy Showcases – Digital Agenda for the Energy Transitions (SINTEG) is a funding programme for the use of smart technology to link energy generation and consumption by using innovative grid technologies and operating principles. In total €230 million have been assigned as funding for the model regions over a period of four years. The showcases shall be a blueprint of smart energy structures that can be implemented on a large scale across Germany.

This report, released by CEE Bankwatch Network and Friends of the Earth Europe, shows that EU billions intended to revamp the carbon-intensive, inefficient energy systems of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) are being misspent. In nine CEE countries only 7 per cent of the 178 billion euros in European Regional Development and Cohesion Funds will be invested into renewables, energy efficiency and SMART grids. At the same time the integration of climate considerations into all plans and projects – as required under EU law – remains superficial.
