The Horizon 2020 co-funded project CRAVEzero (Cost Reduction and market Acceleration for Viable nearly zero-Energy buildings) focuses on proven and new approaches to cost reduction of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) at all stages of the life cycle. The main goal is to identify and eliminate the extra-costs for NZEBs related to processes, technologies, building operation, and to promote innovative business models taking into account the cost-effectiveness for all the stakeholders.

In the ZERO-PLUS project report “Market analysis of trends in the construction of residential highly energy performing buildings” a significant amount of information on barriers and drivers for the construction of highly energy efficient buildings, and for renovation programmes at the district or settlement level that improve the energy efficiency of existing buildings has been collected and reported.

The innovation and power of business models helps in enlisting large number of utilities and governments to participate in energy saving projects. This helps in aggregation of demand. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) then procures equipment or services in bulk enabling reduction in costs due to ensuing economies to scale. For instance, in the UJALA programme, the bulk cost of LEDs have reduced from Rs. 310 ($ 5) to Rs. 40 ($ 0. 65) as a result of procurement of 300 million LEDs over a 2 year period.

A study from the German Energy Agency-Dena, based on a survey among decision makers of 20 important office building investors and 20 major renters of office areas in Germany has resulted in sustainability and energy efficiency becoming more and more important; yet the main decision criteria are still economic. The investors aim at high building values and low operation costs and high renting demand. These are the main reasons for the energy renovation of their buildings.
