The obligations on municipalities and cities around the world to lower their CO2 and to increase their energy efficiency while still maintaining reliability are increasingly pressing; however, district energy is proving to be a solution to this thorny dilemma. District energy can play a key role in building smart, self-sustainable cities. Urban areas are home to the majority of the world’s citizens, meaning that the fight against climate change will be either won or lost in cities.

Inclusion of societal costs and sustainable levels of renovation. This study is mainly based on publications of German-speaking authors and on German costs.

A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Mexico has shown that green solutions have strong potential to increase comfort and quality in life - important considerations for fast-growing, emerging economies. China's programme of targets for the 1000 most energy intensive enterprises led to permanent improvements in energy management and efficiencies in these companies. The WWF-World Wide Fund for Nature urges the G20 Finance Ministers to take the steps required now to ensure that the next major wave of infrastructure investment is green.
