The education of a nation's population is the foundation for its improvement and growth in the international community. Educational buildings are the cornerstone of this foundation and they consume a large portion of a nation's non-industrial energy needs. The indoor climate of the buildings (indoor air quality, percepted temperature, possible glare and acoustics) have a substantial influence on the knowledge transfer.

Eco-Schools is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). In addition to Eco-Schools, FEE runs Green Key, Young Reporters for the Environment, Blue Flag and Learning about Forests. There are 46 countries around the world that run the Eco-Schools programme, linking more than 40,000 schools – from the UK to France, from Morocco to South Africa.

Building describtion The Solar Community Centre was constructed based on the idea of creating a building, which meets and satisfies the objectives for future community buildings for all age groups and social stratums. Furthermore, the goal was to build an optimized building in terms of resource usage and an ecologically sound building both in construction and operation. The finished building is seen in figure 1 to 3.

At an AEEBC seminar held in Helsinki, Zsolt Toth discussed the provisions of the EU’s recast of Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The new directive will require all buildings put up from the end of 2020 to be ‘nearly-zero energy’ and, to a large extent, use renewable energy. The recast buildings directive sets out rules for the energy performance of both new and existing buildings. Member States will have to take measures to achieve these requirements at "cost-optimal levels".
