On 5 July, at the 'EU-China Smart City Forum', Günther H. Oettinger, EU Commissioner for Energy will deliver a keynote speech on ‘EU and China: together for better cities and for better lives’ making an explicit reference to the overall theme of the World Expo 2010. DG ENER will present its ‘Covenant of Mayors’ initiative. From their side, Chinese government will explain their achievements and projects for energy successful urban initiatives.

The joint community of the two EU projects "School of the Future" and "VERYSchool" gathers and presents information and examples of high performance school buildings within the EU. Besides case studies also guidelines, tools and training material are offered. Additional information such as results from national examples of (nearly) zero energy schools shall be added by the community members.

These are the first detailed CESP schemes to be announced in Scotland and Wales by any of the UK's energy companies. The first three schemes will be:In England, SSE will work with South Tyneside Homes across a number of local areas. South Tyneside Homes is a registered social landlord, who manage and maintain former council-owned homes and estates. The project involves a wide variety of measures including external insulation of homes, new heating systems and also some micro generation technologies.

Die Einführung der Ganztagsschule oder G8 bedeuten hohe Auslastung der Schulgebäude. In Zukunft werden die Kinder und Jugendlichen noch mehr Zeit in der Schule verbringen als bisher. Deshalb muss die Schule diesen und weiteren veränderten Anforderungen gerecht werden, die auch die bauliche und technische Gestaltung der Schulgebäude betreffen. Gefragt sind ganzheitliche Lösungen, die Bau und Technik einerseits, den Menschen und das Nutzungsverhalten andererseits einbeziehen. Die Bundesregierung hat die Thematik ministerienübergreifend in ihrer High-Tech Strategie verankert.

The prefabricated wood structure is insulated with recycled textile and rockwool. The net-zero energy house is equipped with a micro-CHP gas unit together with solar photovoltaics. The very low energy house uses a heat pump coupled with a gas condensing boiler and a solar water heater. Both houses have a balanced ventilation system with heat recovery. The two houses share a common lobby, a patio and a technical room for heating and ventilation systems.

The housing sector currently accounts for 40% of Europe's energy needs. The lack of energy conservation in this sector is believed to be partly due to energy prices and voluntary regulatory measures. Both European research initiatives support the need for change in energy use and services across consumer and industrial groups, and are headed by Finnish institutes working in collaboration with a number of researchers from Europe and abroad.
