Few people in Norway had even heard of heat pumps at the beginning of the millennium. By 2019, some 1.4 million units had been sold in the country, figures from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) show.   Norway’s rapid adoption of heat pumps was spurred by a series of cold winters, an increase in electricity prices, grants and bans on old boilers.

The Low Energy Building Database is a repository of low-energy building information created to support the planning and development of low energy new build and refurbishment with exemplary case studies. This tool was developed following the Retrofit for Future (RfF) programme launched in the UK about ten years ago, when £17m have been allocated by the government for increasing the energy efficiency of the building stock.

Buildings do not consume energy, people do. Managed by the Executive Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises (EASME), these projects have helped consumers understand their energy use at their homes or their work places, and have motivated them to engage in energy-saving behaviour. It is possible to change the way energy is perceived and used by consumers with low-cost and cost-effective ICT solutions, and basic personal choices can translate in significant energy and economic savings.

Abstract: Innovative designs, such as those taking place in nearly zero-energy buildings, need to tackle Life Cycle Cost, because reducing the impact of use can carry other collateral and unexpected costs. For example, it is interesting to include the evaluation of end-of-life costs by introducing future activities of selective dismantling and waste management, to also improve the environmental performance of the demotion project.
