National Occupational Standards (NOS) in The United Kingdom are statements of the standards of performance individuals must achieve when carrying out functions in the workplace, together with specifications of the underpinning knowledge and understanding. National Occupational Standards are not mandatory in the U.K.  However, they are nationally recognised standards developed by employers, and are an important benchmark of best practice that can be used by employers to ensure that they are meeting the standards set by their industry.
