How is Australia handling the implementation of energy efficient measures in houses? The answer is...not so well. Australia is indeed 20 years behind the rest of the world in climate friendly house standards. This means Australian houses are not expected to the reach net zero by 2050.

The BERLIN Smart Tool, developed by University of Western Macedonia and within the BERLIN project, calculates the proper size and combination of photovltaics and battery storage system in order to reach self-sufficiency in buildings. The online tool aims to promote self-sufficiency in buildings with flexible loads, by properly sizing the photovoltaic and battery storage systems to be installed in a building, and by providing an efficient schedule for the flexible loads.

When we transpose the three R’s of the circular economy ‘Reduce, Re-use, Recycle’ to energy in buildings, the specific application of these generic terms becomes ‘Reduction of energy demand, Efficient installations, Renewable energies.’ Some call these three steps here in Barcelona as the “Trias Energetica” and when drawing their buildings architects should integrate this method from the beginning.

The apartment building at the end of Cosmonauts Street in the small Lithuanian town of Marijampolė is flashy for the neighborhood. Built in 1993, the narrow nine-story building is newer than a lot of the Soviet-era apartment blocks to be found across the city. After a renovation in 2018, the 54-unit building looks fresh, with alternating columns of peach- and cream-colored siding to distinguish it from towers of drab concrete.
