The digital revolution is not only about large tech companies but also essentially about start-ups and SMEs that provide or use digital solutions. SMEs are vital to the European economy, making up 99% of Europe's businesses1 and accounting for two-thirds of total employment. The variety is huge, from innovative and fast-growing companies that provide or use digital solutions, to those that face significant challenges such as acquiring the necessary skills to benefit from digital technologies.

The EU, in light of the 2030 and 2050 energy and climate goals, has adopted an ambitious vision for the energy performance of its buildings among other measures. This is because the building sector still represents about 40% of energy consumption in the EU with the largest cost-effective savings potential. However, in order to meet this vision, the construction sector must be ready to deliver high-performance retrofits and nearly zero energy buildings. As in every field, this would require a number of qualified professionals and building workers.

The modular project TEESCHOOLS is the last project within the Efficient Buildings Community to come to an end.  TEESCHOOLS has covered a long distance on the path for the decarbonisation of public building stock.  A new publication now collects and presents all the most important outcomes of this journey.

Jan Cromwijk and Veronika Schröpfer introduce new training and assessment tools developed in several EU Horizon 2020 projects to assist practitioners to identify and address the strengths and weaknesses of their low carbon skills for new build and retrofit. Online learning packages to address skill gaps have been created, are freely accessible, and can facilitate the co-creation and application of interdisciplinary qualification schemes.
