The Interreg Europe VIOLET project addresses a common challenge among EU regions, home to a building stock of important traditional buildings. These buildings are an asset not only to residents, but also to various industries that sustain European economies, such as cultural tourism and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
The challenge is to create a building culture that is sympathetic to modern requirements of reinstatement and conservation for improved energy usage and reduced carbon emissions, without endangering architectural heritage. Without this forward-looking policy change, traditional buildings that are now a valuable asset will become a burden in the near future. VIOLET addresses this challenge, with an overall aim to improve regional public policy to enhance energy efficiency in traditional buildings, by addressing both low carbon and cultural preservation actions.
Through cooperation among five regions at different stages of development and one expert advisory partner, VIOLET fosters a multisector, integrated planning approach bringing together organisations in charge of energy efficiency and those in charge of cultural heritage at regional and EU level.
Thanks to a set of interlinked activities for interregional exchange, communication and stakeholder involvement, VIOLET partners develop 5 Action Plans to improve European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and local policy instruments on energy efficiency in traditional buildings. VIOLET achieves its results with actions related to some key requirements: a multisector approach; technological and non-technological solutions for energy efficiency renovation; application of monitoring tools and capacity building. VIOLET also creates long-term, ever-expanding networks in this field, through local and interregional Communities of Practice.
In the long-term, thanks to policy improvements and development of EU level recommendations for updated regulations on the topic, VIOLET has an important impact on sustainable development, on growth and job creation and on preservation of EU cultural heritage.
